Khao Lak is located about 50 kilometres north of Koh Phuket Island on the mainland in Phang Nga province. Most of its sandy beaches stretch from the Khaolak-Lumru National Park in the South for about 20 kilometres northwards, starting with Sunset Beach, Nang Thong Beach, Bangniang Beach, Khuk Kak Beach, Pakweep Beach and Bang Sak Beach in the very North. A single beach, namely Khaolak Beach is located south of and adjacent to Khao Lak Lamru National Park.

Khaolak Beach is located 5 kilometres south of the centre of Khao Lac and stretches from the border of Khaoluk-Lamru National Park south for approximately 800 metres. The sandy beach ends at a small rocky cliff that separates it in the South from neighbouring Poseidon Beach. The rocky headland to the North, which is part of Kaolak Lumru National Park protects Kho Lak Beach from the strong underwater currents of the monsoon season, so that swimming here is less dangerous.
Khaolak Merlin Resort and Khao Lak Emerald Resort are offering first-class accommodation in Khaolak, while The Briza is a boutique-style hotel. The old tin mining town of Takuapa is about 35 kilometres further on.
