Khao Lak is located about 50 kilometres north of Koh Phuket Island on the mainland in Phang Nga province. Most of its sandy beaches stretch from the Khaolak-Lumru National Park in the South for about 20 kilometres northwards, starting with Sunset Beach, Nangtong Beach, Bang Niang Beach, Khukkak Beach, Pakwiep Beach and Bangsak Beach in the very North. A single beach, namely Kao Luk Beach is located south of and adjacent to Khao-Lak Lamru National Park.

The most southern part of Khao Lak is the 500 metres long stretch of Sunset Beach. This part of Kho Lak is surrounded by the mountains of Khaoluk-Lamru National Park, which are almost touching the Andaman Sea coast, leaving little space for the street and the resorts. All Sunset Beach Resorts are located below street level and offer direct access to the sandy Sun Set Beach that is interrupted by some solitary rocks.
While Baan Krating Khaolak Resort, Khaolak Sunset Resort, Khaolak Bayfront Resort and Khao Lak Resort are middle-class hotels in Kao Lack, Khao Lak Palm Beach Resort, Khaolak Paradise and Khaolak Wanaburee Resort offer first-class accommodation in Khao Lak. The old tin mining town of Takuapa is about 30 kilometres further on.

Khao Lak is spelled in many different ways like Khao Luk, Kho Lak, Khao Lac, Kau Lak, Kao Lak, Kau Lac, Khao-Lak, Ko Lak, Khaolak, Khao Lack, Kao Lak, Kao Luk, Kao Lac, Kao Lack and Khaoluk.
